27 Jan: Andy

Andy, 70, arrived in London from a violent 1958 Cyprus. As a young man he worked in West End restaurants in order to pay his way through college and with much hard work went on to set up his Leicester Square driving school. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were among Andy's more notable students. He was also keenly involved with Greek Pirate radio in the 60s and 70s. Kentish Town, London.

26 Jan: Mohammed

Mohammed, 52, manages the Ziyo Somalian social club. He and his family escaped violence in Mogadishu and came to london in the 1990s. Kentish Town, London.

25 Jan: Dave

A couple of expat Kiwis with a mission to to "have everyone in the United Kingdom eating arancini, whenever the chance", Dave and his business partner (also a Dave) started rolling fresh sicilian style rice balls in 2009 for the London markets. They have recently opened the Arancini Brothers Factory Cafe, where they also happen to make one of the best flat whites in town. Kentish Town, London.

24 Jan: Stoly

Stoly has made London his home for the last 20 years. A proud "war dodger", he was granted asylum in the UK after escaping draft from the Yugoslav war.  Stoly has worked as a grocer for the last 10 years, and is always a familiar face at the local organics shop. Kentish Town, London.

23 Jan: Kabir

Kabir is a Bangladeshi who has been living and studying in London since 2009. To help support his business management degree, he works distributing the Evening Standard to commuters outside the tube station. Kentish Town, London.

22 Jan: Emily & Wolfgang

Originally from Berkley, California, Emily first came to Paris as a student where she completed a year of her French Literature degree. With Wolfgang (a german shepherd, Emily's first purchase at the age of 6) in tow, she returned to Paris in 2009 and currently works as an administration assistant for Google SEMEA's vice-president. Saara, 32, is an African Studies graduate from SOAS, London. She left the UK five months ago and started work at the famed Parisian bookshop Shakespeare and Company, which leaves her with "little time for reading".  Left Bank, Paris.

Hanh, 29, grew up in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Through a series of scholarships from schools in New Zealand, Singapore and Paris, Hanh has completed a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Public Affairs. Running grocery stalls at the Dalston Markets has been a family trade since Sue's Grandfather was a young man. Many of the other stalls are also run by Sue's uncles and cousins. Her generation may be the last, however, as most of the next have opted for different careers.

Pug came to London from New Zealand to study ten years back, and has since set up a successful East London based design company. He is currently studying towards a Master of Design and has just bought himself an old scooter. Kentish Town, London.

Originally from Iran, Harry arrived in London in 1977 and undertook a career as a construction engineer. Looking for a "life change" he took over the local butcher's shop and opened Harry's Butcher and Prime Fishmonger in 2001.
